Making time to calm anxious minds

The importance of singular tasks and mindfulness

Mental health has always been a subject close to my heart. Everyone knows someone that has been effected by anxiety, depression or other mental health issues at some point in their lives. For me, the leap into Motherhood brought such huge joy but also anxieties.

When I started maternity leave and wasn’t able to work on my Architectural projects I felt a little lost and anxious about the huge changes ahead. My husband set me an interesting challenge to occupy my busy brain and refocus my mind onto a practical task….and so FontaineBleau jewellery was born!

For me, the process of harvesting, cleaning and making is so deeply engrossing that it brought me immediate relief from a very busy life (four children later and a career in Architecture and it still works!). If I felt this calm and engrossed why couldn’t others? This was the start of our Worksjop events. I wanted to bring that feeling to other busy Mums..a time to relax and create in a friendly atmosphere with a luxury feel but done in the knowledge that we are being environmentally responsible. The development of the letterbox kits was the next natural step as it makes this process even more accessible. We want to help as many people as we can in a sustainable way.
I was fascinated to read the blog referenced below, and understand why crafting has this huge calming effect.

Our fast-paced lifestyles and constant hurrying to our next commitment is in no way beneficial to our overall well-being. We strive for success but barely give ourselves time to rest and enjoy the things that truly make us happy and calm our ever-moving minds. It is so important that we take into account our brain health and overall well-being and put into practice things that bring us joy, soothe and comfort us, and provide anxiety relief.

Beading keeps our hands busy and our minds at ease. The time spent beading necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and embroidery requires full focus and concentration on the present moment, allowing us to practice mindfulness, and helps prevent our thoughts from wandering. The time we spend beading is spent constructively, and with purpose, and helps us escape the world around us, slow down, and focus on one task, one bead at a time. Many beading projects are done by stringing beads one-by-one, forcing the beader to take his or her time and to fixate on a singular task
